Last February, I gave a talk at the Spiritual Renewal Center in Syracuse entitled, “Human Suffering and the God of Love.” I told a friend that it was probably the most complete theological statement I have ever made in one evening (which will either reflect well or poorly on me). Part of it distills material from my LeMoyne College course entitled, “Theological Reponses to Human Suffering.” But it is also a very personal statement of my own Christian belief. Anyway, a video recording of the presentation is now available to view or download from the Center’s website. All you have to do is make a small donation ($15 or whatever you can afford).
In the last couple of months, I’ve been asked some pretty heavy questions about the nature of God and why there is so much suffering in God’s creation. I was ready for those conversations because of the work I did in preparation for my talk. On several of those occasions, I’ve wished that I could say, “I gave a talk that you might find interesting. You can find a video recording of it at this site.” Now I don’t have to wish.

It was a two-hour presentation, but the recording does not include the question-and-answer session at the end, nor the break in the middle, so it’s about 80 minutes long. I hope it can be helpful in framing how we think about God and how we respond to our own suffering and the suffering of others.
